The aircraft fell into a Coral Springs pond minutes after takeoff; The authorities are investigating the causes of the accident.
MADRID, Spain.- A small plane carrying humanitarian aid bound for Jamaica crashed this Monday morning in a pond located in a residential area of Coral Springs, in Broward County, Florida. The accident left two people dead: a father and his daughter, identified as Alexander Wurm, 53, and Serena Wurm, 22.
The aircraft, a Beechcraft B100 King Air, had taken off from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport around 10:1 in the morning with the intention of transporting supplies to Jamaica after the passage of the Hurricane Melissa in the Caribbean. Minutes after takeoff, the plane lost altitude and fell into an artificial pond in the community of Windsor Bay, near the address 5000 NW 57th Way.
According to local authoritiesthe response to the incident was immediate. “Emergency crews responded within minutes of a call reporting the accident,” said Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department Deputy Chief Mike Moser, quoted by Telemundo 51. The official also pointed out that “the police would be in charge of the recovery efforts” while the federal agencies specialized in aviation will be in charge of determining the causes of the incident.
According to initial reports, no injuries were reported on the ground. The remains of the aircraft were scattered in the water and in areas near homes, although no significant structural damage was reported. Neighbors in the area alerted the authorities after hearing the impact.
The plane was registered to International Air Services Inc. and was operating on an aid mission linked to a Christian organization. The reasons for the accident have not yet been determined.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are leading the investigation. The preliminary report is expected to include details about the flight conditions, the mechanical condition of the aircraft and communications with the control tower during the minutes before the accident.
