COP30: Protesters confront security to enter restricted area

Entrances and exits to the Blue Zone, the area where COP30 negotiations are concentrated, were closed in the early evening of this Tuesday (11) after a group of protesters tried to enter the place. Security guards even formed human cordons to prevent the group’s advance. Videos circulating on social media show that protesters even passed through metal detectors, before accessing the entrance pavilion. Afterwards, they were prevented from continuing by security and a confrontation ensued.

The group carried student collective flags and protest banners against oil exploration, the conflict in Palestine and in favor of indigenous causes.

THE Blue Zone is considered territory of the United NationsTherefore, the safety of the site is the responsibility of the organization.

The protesters were removed from the space and the accredited public could leave the area. Military Police cars and police officers moved to reinforce security in the external areas of the pavilion that houses the COP.

There is no information on detainees.

In a statement, the organizers of the March for Health and Climate, held this Tuesday, clarified that the “acts that occurred after the march are not part of the organization of the event that dealt with health and climate”.

According to the group, “the march was a legitimate, peaceful and organized expression of popular mobilization, built on dialogue, responsibility and collective commitment.”

“We reaffirm our respect for the organizing institutions of COP30 and our commitment to a living, healthy and sustainable Amazon for all”, highlighted the organizers of the march.
