Lavrov: US actions against Venezuela will not lead to anything good

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated this Tuesday that the actions of the United States Government against Venezuela will not lead to “anything good.”

In statements to journalists, he described as unacceptable the actions of Washington that, “without trial or process,” intercepts ships under the assumption that they are transporting drugs, without showing evidence of this.

Lavrov expressed that “this is how, in general, countries outside the law act, those that believe themselves above the law.”

«The line that the Trump administration has chosen regarding Venezuela will not lead to anything good. It will not improve Washington’s reputation in the international community,” he emphasized.

Fight drug trafficking in Belgium

The chancellor also referred to articles published by the media about drug trafficking and crime that thrive in Belgium, suggesting Washington change its approach.

“Instead of dealing with Nigeria or Venezuela in the fight against drugs and, in the process, taking over their oil fields, the United States would probably be more convenient to combat this phenomenon in Belgium,” he commented.

He recalled that US troops and others are there, so “it will not be necessary to chase small boats with three people on board.”

Since last August, the US has maintained a military deployment in the Caribbean Sea, arguing the supposed fight against drugs. With this pretext, attacked to several vessels in the area, as well as in the Pacific, indicating that they are allegedly linked to drug trafficking, but without proving it.

Likewise, last October, Trump acknowledged that he authorized the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to carry out covert operations in Venezuelan territory.

For its part, the Government of Venezuela has repeatedly denounced the threat that this military deployment represents for the country and the region. The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, has warned that Washington’s aggression aims to change the Government and appropriate its wealth, mainly oil.
