The accident occurred in the community of La Caoba, in the municipality of Venezuela, when a bus transporting workers collided with a cart.
MADRID, Spain.- A traffic accident that occurred this Monday in the vicinity of the community of La Caoba, in the municipality of Venezuela, Ciego de Ávila, left at least 23 people injured, according to information confirmed by the medical staff of the Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola Provincial Hospital.
The accident involved a bus that was transporting workers from the El Fortín Credit and Commerce Cooperative and a cart, local media reported. Invader Newspaper. The injured were initially transferred to the municipal polyclinic, and later referred to the provincial hospital depending on the severity of each case.
Dr. Inés Padrón González, specialist in Intensive Care and Emergencies and head of the Emergency Service of the Provincial Hospital, pointed out that three patients are life-threatening. Two of them suffered head trauma, while a third could undergo surgery due to abdominal trauma with the presence of free fluid in the cavity.
The rest of the injured are stable, with bruises, fractures and wounds that are being treated by surgical services. Another patient, still in the Venezuelan polyclinic, has a pelvic fracture and will be transferred for evaluation and definition of medical conduct.
So far, the causes of the accident have not been reported, and the competent authorities are investigating the events, according to official information.
This incident adds to a series of massive accidents recorded in recent weeks on Cuban roads. The most recent one occurred this fridayon the National Highway, when a Transtur company bus left the road at kilometer 183, near the Las Cajas settlement, in Aguada de Pasajeros, province of Cienfuegos. The incident left two dead and 18 injured.
Official figures indicate that traffic accidents remain among the main causes of death in the country. Between January and August of this year, 502 deaths were reported, which represents 80% of the total recorded in 2024. That year ended with 634 fatalities and more than 6,600 injuries, a significant increase compared to the previous period.
According to the National Road Safety Commission, the majority of accidents are due to human errors, including lack of attention behind the wheel, speeding, violation of the right of way and alcohol consumption. Added to this is the progressive deterioration of the roads, a factor that specialists and citizens consider key in the increase in the danger of the road network in Cuba.
