The Catholic Church distanced itself from the sayings of St.ebastián Camacho, a monsignor who was in favor of the Yes to the repeal of the 135 articles of the Law of Urgent Consideration which will be submitted to a referendum on March 27.
The publicist Esteban Valenti, one of those in charge of the Yes campaign, published a video on his social networks in which the figure of Camacho appears, who is a monsignor of the Old Catholic Church.
“We are adhering to the Yes for many reasons,” he said. “Coming here (to the church) we saw how the police were detaining a woman with her daughter, because of her appearance, knowing about our work. She was finding herself in trouble because of her appearance. We have to bet on uniting, not on separate,” he said.
Monsignor Camacho made a special request. “We want the 135 articles to be repealed and for the entire political spectrum to be called upon to work together in a country for all,” he added.
As a result of these comments, the Catholic Church referred to the referendum and distanced itself from Camacho’s position, clarifying that the church to which he belongs is not part of his institution.
The message was replicated by the Archbishop of Montevideo, Cardinal Daniel Sturla.
“We clarify that the Catholic Church leaves to the conscience and decision of each faithful the choice of their vote regarding the #LUC referendum. The Old Catholic Church is not part of our institution,” he said.
