The president Luis Abinader announced on Monday a historic investment of 700 million dollars which will be executed between 2025 and 2026 in the main airports of the country, as part of the strengthening of the airline sector and the response to growing international demand.
The airports that will receive these improvements are the Punta Cana Internationalhe Cibao International and the International of the Americas (AILA). The first two are private investments, while those of AILA come from the increase in airport taxes as part of the agreement between Aerodom and the Dominican State.
The works contemplate terminal expansion and infrastructure improvementswith the aim of optimizing the passenger experience and increasing operational capacity.
“These investments will allow us to meet the growing demand for passengers and international operations, consolidating Dominican Republic as a strategic air destination in the Caribbean,” said Abinader.
Advance in connectivity
The investment adds to the progress made in connectivity air in recent years. Between 2020 and October 2025, 1,310 air routesand currently operate 305 active airlinesincluding national, international and charter operators.
- Furthermore, the country has signed 57 bilateral instruments between 2019 and 2024, including 30 air service agreements and 17 memorandums of understandingwhich has facilitated the expansion of routes and the liberalization of airspace.
These actions have positioned the Dominican Republic as a regional leader in connectivitywith a 49% growth since 2019according to the World Economic Forum 2024. It is projected that by December 2025, 24.7 million seatsand by 2030 it is expected to reach 25.86 million passengers incoming and outgoing.
