The governor of Paraíba, João Azevêdo, ordered the creation of a commission to investigate the cause of the rupture of a reservoir located in the Prata neighborhood, in Campina Grande, on Saturday (8).
The incident left one person dead and at least two people injured but out of danger. Several homes were taken by water.
“The circumstances of the case are being investigated. As soon as the breach was identified, technical and assistance teams were mobilized immediately, in partnership with the civil defense and the fire department, to guarantee the safety of the affected families and initiate emergency measures”, informed the Paraíba Water and Sewage Company (Cagepa).
The commission will be composed of the following bodies:
- Secretariat of Infrastructure and Water Resources,
- Secretariat of Human Development,
- Civil Defense,
- Superintendence of Works of the State Development Plan (Suplan),
- Fire Department,
- Military Police,
- State Popular Housing Company of Paraíba (Cehap) and
- Cagepa.
Supply and compensation
Initially, the rupture left 40 neighborhoods in Campina Grande and the municipalities of Lagoa Seca, Lagoa de Roça, Areial and Montadas with their water supply temporarily interrupted. In a note released this Sunday (9), Cagepa reported that the water supply was “safely restored”.
“After detailed technical inspections, it was confirmed that the other reservoirs remain intact and in full operating condition.”
The forecast is that the water supply will gradually be regularized in the region throughout the day. The families affected by the disruption, according to the statement, are being assisted with hotel stays, social rent, food and “support in all instances”. “The government determined full compensation for the affected families,” concluded Cagepa.
