The UCV University Council warned that current salaries are “humiliatingly meager” and “prevent basic needs from being covered.” The amounts received as a bonus range between 4 and 40 dollars. Unions described the splitting of benefits as “rude”
The Central University of Venezuela rejected the fractional payment of the Christmas bonus to university workers. In a statement, the University Council pointed out that this action “is an intolerable injustice that further harms” the rights of the sector.
In the writingdated November 6, the University Council warned that current salaries are “humiliatingly meager” and “prevent basic needs from being covered.” Furthermore, the university body noted, “they cause an absurd contradiction.”
“It is not feasible to train professionals of excellence for the present and future of the country when academic, administrative and worker personnel are victims of economic precariousness and hopelessness,” it was stated.
The UCV demanded that the Ministry of Higher Education discuss this issue. “The allocation of resources in proportion to the real value of university work does not allow further delay.”

In the discussions, Argelia Castillo, general secretary of the National Union of University Professionals in Administrative and Technical Functions (Apufat), recalled that the minimum wage has remained frozen since March 2022.
He demanded that the bonuses be adjusted and incorporated into the base salary. In turn, he denounced the non-compliance with contractual clauses, labor liabilities and benefits such as vacations and bonuses, which he described as “alms.”
While Yanira Romero, general secretary of the National Union of UCV Workers, described the splitting of benefits as “rude” and “lack of respect.” He stated that the amounts received as a bonus range between 4 and 40 dollars.
Romero also rejected the so-called “worker constituent”, which he considered a bureaucratic structure imposed from power and alien to the true needs of the workers.
Violation of the autonomy of the UCV
Carlos Suarez, general secretary of the UCV Single Union of Workers (Sutra UCV), for his part denounced a new violation of university autonomy after an incursion by security forces.
“Yesterday (November 5) we had an incursion by State repressive forces into this university where they took two detained fellow workers (…), they simply came and took them away and detained them for more than six hours,” Suárez commented.
The union leader described the procedure as “arbitrary and humiliating.” He indicated that the workers were released without explanation.
In addition, he warned about the risk of these actions being repeated against students or teachers. “We cannot wait for them to arrive at a classroom at any moment and take away one of the imprisoned students or a teacher.”
