Alleged plot against Israeli ambassador generates clash of versions between Mexico and Israel

Alleged plot against Israeli ambassador generates clash of versions between Mexico and Israel

What is known about the alleged attempted attack?

It all started on Friday, when a US official said on condition of anonymity that the Quds Force, the elite of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, planned the plot in late 2024 and that it was foiled this year.

“The plot was neutralized and currently does not represent a threat,” he stated, without detailing evidence or explaining how it was stopped, which immediately generated reactions in Mexico by all parties involved.

Israel and Iran speak out in Mexico

The Israeli Embassy in Mexico issued a statement thanking the Mexican security services for “having neutralized the terrorist intentions, directed by Iran, to attack the ambassador.”

The statement recalls historical attacks in Latin America linked to Iran, such as the 1992 and 1994 attacks in Buenos Aires, and ensures that Tehran maintains a pattern of destabilizing actions against Israel and its citizens around the world.

For its part, the Iranian embassy in Mexico rejected the accusation. “It is a media invention, a big lie, whose objective is to damage the friendly and historical relations between both countries (Mexico and Iran), which we categorically reject,” the Iranian embassy in Mexico published in X, in Tehran’s first reaction to the complaint.

Mexico denies having knowledge

However, the controversy arose when the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) and the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) reported that they do not have any report regarding an alleged attack against the Israeli ambassador in Mexico.

The Foreign Ministry reiterated its willingness to maintain fluid communication with all diplomatic representations accredited in the country, while the SSPC reaffirmed its respectful and coordinated collaboration, always within the framework of national sovereignty, with all security agencies that request it.

Ambassador maintains her version

This calls into question all the information given first by the US official in anonymous format and then by the ambassador herself and the diplomat Kranz Neiger, since the Mexican Government had been thanked for its participation, but it denied having knowledge of any attempted attack.

Ambassador Kranz Neiger herself declared that she did not know “the reasons that led to the publication of that statement” and stated that “those who acted to neutralize this threat were the Security and Intelligence authorities of Mexico,” according to statements to Radio Formula.

The alleged plot occurs in a context of high tension between Israel and Iran, marked by attacks and counterattacks in the Middle East.
