A recognition of journalistic resistance
In his speech, Gorriti also warned about the current challenges facing the profession of a journalist. “We, journalists, find ourselves on the front lines of a front that is crumbling, we better get ready to face tough times. When I talk about journalism, I mean that which strives to discover, inform and expose relevant truths, those that certain organizations or individuals need to keep hidden. This journalism is what today faces an existential danger in many places,” he added.
The IPI highlighted that the director of IDL has been a key figure in the defense of investigative journalism in Latin America, especially for his reporting on corruption and organized crime, including the Lava Jato and Cuellos Blancos del Puerto cases. The institution highlighted that its work “embodies the true essence of press freedom” and constitutes an example of resistance against threats against the media and democracy.
The international organization also recalled that Gorriti has faced judicial harassment, smear campaigns and threats for his investigations, but that he has maintained his independence and commitment to the right of people to be informed of what is happening. “His bravery, integrity and leadership inspire journalists around the world,” the IPI said in its official statement.
