In 2024 there were 15 deaths, the lowest number in 6 years according to UNASEV Director
An important meeting was held at the National Cultural Center as part of the process of forming a Departmental Road Safety Unit.
In that sense, one of the UNASEV Directors was present who, among other things, revealed that Cerro Largo registered in 2024 the lowest number of deaths due to traffic accidents in the last 6 years.
“One of the priorities we have is decentralization, it was one of the axes that we proposed in this period. We come on a tour throughout the country with the UNASEV Board” held Aníbal Pintos.
“This visit we are making is to form the Local Road Safety Unit in Cerro Largo. At UNASEV, the way we have to reach the territory is through the Local Units” he stated.
“We cannot have a single recipe, a formula for all departments equally because each department has its idiosyncrasies and its different priority issues” express.
DRIVING LICENSE BY POINTS
“}This is an issue at the national level that had to be regularized with all Municipalities for a single driving license in order to be able to talk about points-based permits today.” pointed out the Director of the National Road Safety Unit.
“The idea is that it will come into effect from the first half of next year” advancement.
USE OF THE HELMET
This is one of the issues that worries us. In Cerro Largo, for example, a significant percentage of the population resists using this important security element.
“We start from the basis that we have to work a lot on the risk factors and when we visualize and see in each of the departments, the first thing we see is the use of the case” he assured. “There are measurements that put the department at case utilization levels of 74%, but it is an aspect in which we have to move forward” he admitted.
“In these meetings that we come to do with the Local Units, it is to determine how that helmet is being used. If it is being used correctly and even if it is the appropriate helmet, if it is certified, if it is approved and if it is worn fastened” he emphasized.
“If the appropriate helmets are not used, this translates into the number of serious injuries or even people who lose their lives” he remarked.
“In Uruguay, in the year 2024, 434 people died” revealed. “With this indicator we can affirm that today in Uruguay one person is dying as a result of traffic. There will be 75 injured, 69 accidents, 10 seriously injured and 4 people who will be left with permanent consequences” warned Aníbal Pintos.
THE LOWEST FIGURE IN 6 YEARS
“Specifically, in the department of Cerro Largo in 2024, 15 people died” reported. “If we look back a little, it is a historic figure for the department, it is the lowest in 6 years” projection. “That’s good, but we have to support it so that this continues to be minimized. Those 15 deaths from accidents here in Cerro Largo represent at least 1 per month. That 1 when it’s a family member, a neighbor, it’s someone from the neighborhood, someone from the soccer team, that’s when the rest of the people become aware.” said.
“These types of activities that we are going to start doing here are what will allow us to reach the territory to sensitize people so that they become aware, so that the helmet that young people use is a certified helmet and an approved helmet, so that when people get in the car they fasten their seat belt and do not use their cell phone when driving” he stated. “Distraction is one of the factors that is costing us lives today” warned Aníbal Pintos, Director of UNASEV.
