The Rio de Janeiro City Hall Operations Center (COR-Rio) informs that the displacement of a low pressure system close to the coast of the Southeast Region and the passage of a cold front will intensify the winds in the capital of Rio de Janeiro between this Friday (7) and Sunday (9). This Friday, the forecast is for moderate to occasionally strong winds from the evening onwards. On Saturday (8), moderate to strong wind gusts are forecast, mainly during the afternoon. In the early hours of Sunday, moderate to occasionally strong gusts of wind may still occur.
During this period, the Wind gusts may reach intensity between 50 kilometers per hour (km/h) and 100 km/h. The weather warning is valid until 6am on Sunday.
The Brazilian Navy reported that the arrival of an extratropical cyclone which is close to the coast of Rio will impact sea conditions and issued a storm surge warning for the city’s shoreline. The phenomenon will begin on Saturday afternoon and is expected to end on Sunday night. Waves can reach 3.5 meters high. Bathers and small boats should avoid the sea, due to the height of the waves.
Overwarning
Given the predicted weather conditions, the State Secretariat for Civil Defense is on alert, starting tonight, with the Integrated Risk Management Office mobilized. The measure was adopted through the State Disaster Management Center, with the aim of reinforcing monitoring and prompt response to possible occurrences in different regions of the state.
The Risk Management Office operates in an integrated manner, bringing together state emergency sectors and allowing coordinated action in risk situations. During the activation period, the teams remain in a state of alert and readiness, ensuring support for municipal Civil Defense actions and strengthening the response capacity in cases of natural disasters.
The initiative also strengthens the work of the Emergency Disaster Support Group (Gead), responsible for supporting field operations and coordination between the bodies involved. The objective is to increase the efficiency of the state risk management system and ensure that preventive measures are implemented in advance.
Monitoring of meteorological and hydrological conditions is carried out in partnership with the State Center for Monitoring and Alerting of Natural Disasters (Cemaden-RJ). The teams continue to monitor continuously, in order to guarantee the protection of the population and minimize the impacts of possible adverse events.
Recommendations
At home:
- Close windows, hinged windows and cabinet doors to prevent wind from channeling into the home;
- Blinds, curtains or blackouts must also be closed to prevent fragments from spreading, in case a window breaks;
- Electrical appliances and gas valves must be closed. This way, there is no aggravation in the event of a tree falling;
- Avoid leaving objects that could fall in high places;
- Keep trees in the garden or yard always pruned and well cared for;
- Be careful: if there is a lack of light, be careful with the use of candles to avoid fires.
In the street:
- Do not take shelter under trees or metal coverings;
- Avoid practicing outdoor sports, especially at sea;
- Avoid being close to cliffs, slopes or high places without protection;
- Avoid passing under electrical cables, billboards, scaffolding, ladders;
- Do not park vehicles near transmission towers and advertising signs;
- Do not burn garbage, do not set fire to land to remove vegetation, do not light fires or throw cigarette butts on roads or forested land;
- Be careful: if a tree falls, it is possible that the power grid has been broken. In this situation, there is a risk of accidents caused by lightning.
