Opposition leaders Edmundo González Urrutia and María Corina Machado insisted that the United States Government review the annulment of the Temporary Protection Statute (TSP), which expired this Friday for some 250,000 Venezuelan migrants, and achieve the issuance “of a status that protects them.”
“We work day and night to obtain a review of the case from the US authorities and achieve the issuance of a status that protects them,” the opponents noted in a statement.
These efforts, they indicated, are “permanent” before the administration of Donald Trump and the US Congress.
Some 250,000 Venezuelans were left without TPS protection in the United States this Friday, November 7, an issue that leaves them in legal limbo and at low risk of deportation. Another 350,000 migrants already lost their protection weeks ago.
González Urrutia and Machado expressed their solidarity with Venezuelans in the US. “This situation of anguish, uncertainty and constant risk must stop, and that was the mandate we received in the July 28 elections: to ensure that all Venezuelans can return voluntarily and be protected within their own country.”
In that sense, they stated that “being Venezuelan can no longer be synonymous with a refugee,” and that the greatest protection for migrants is to “recover the freedom of their homeland, the value of their passport and have a democratic government that defends them.”
Other opponents have also expressed public opinions for the US Government to reconsider this measure.
