With the right to break a world record, Brazil added, this Friday (7), another 12 medals on the penultimate day of the Parapan American Youth Games held in Santiago (Chile). In this way, the Brazilian delegation reached a total of 68 achievements (42 gold, 18 silver and eight bronze), maintaining first position in the general classification.
This Friday’s highlight was Charles Eduardo Santos from Minas Gerais, who, at 16 years of age, broke the junior world record (under-18) in the weightlifting category up to 49 kilos. The athlete lifted 116 kilos on his third attempt and surpassed the old mark of 115 kilos.
Also in weightlifting, Brazil added three more golds this Friday, with Natália Gonçalves from Minas Gerais (up to 50 kilos category), with Meyriellen Brandt from Rio de Janeiro (up to 55 kilos) and with Paulo Roberto Severo from Rio Grande do Sul (up to 49 kilos next gen, for athletes over 18 years old), and a silver, with Clayton Costa from São Paulo, in the up to 59 kilos category.
Another sport in which the Brazilian team achieved important achievements was bocce. Eduardo Vasconcelos from Brasilia secured gold in the BC2 class (for athletes who cannot receive assistance) after beating Mexican José Ángel Rodríguez 9-1 in the final. In addition to him, José Antônio Santos from Rio Grande do Norte won the final and took gold in the BC4 class (severe disabilities, but do not receive assistance) against Canadian André John Woodrow, with a score of 8 to 2. In the BC3 class (very severe disabilities), São Paulo’s Gabriel Serafim defeated Peruvian Alejandro Hinostroza 6 to 2 and also won a gold medal.
Furthermore, Brazil secured a silver in the BC1 class (assistant assistance option), with Gabrielly Alves from Rondônia and Samuel da Silva from Rio, while Joice Lira from Pará and Clarice Sobreira from Ceará secured bronzes, respectively, in the BC4 and BC2 classes.
