President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo yesterday ruled out that her government is going to grant greater support to corn producers who have created new blockades on some roads in the country, pointing out that an agreement has already been reached with most of them and that the committed resources represent a significant effort by the federal administration.
In his morning conference at the National Palace, he also denied that the resources allocated to health institutes will be cut, stating that this sector is one of those that “has the greatest budget increase.”
Sheinbaum recalled that last week, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) signed an agreement with the corn producers of Guanajuato, Jalisco and Michoacán, which allowed the release of most of the roads blocked by the protests. This agreement considers the support of 950 pesos per ton of corn and the creation of a new Market Management and Marketing System, in order to guarantee better prices for national grains.
In the face of demonstrations by groups that insist on demanding greater support, the president assured that the remaining blockades “are very few” and in several cases respond to political interests. “The majority have already signed with the Ministry of Agriculture and the windows are about to open to access next year’s resources,” he indicated.
When asked about the possibility of expanding support, Sheinbaum was categorical: “No, it is the support that we have established and it is a very important effort that we are making to be able to support the producers.”
On the other hand, regarding the health budget, he explained that changes in the presentation of data may give the impression that there is a reduction, but in reality the funds come from other sources. “This change was made to facilitate and reduce bureaucracy. There is no decrease in the budget even for the national health institutes,” he stressed. He added that his government is working to make the use of public resources more agile and transparent.
