SANTO DOMINGO.-Cases of fever, sore throat and other respiratory conditions in children have increased at the Dr. Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Hospital after the rains and flooding caused by Hurricane Melissaas confirmed by doctors at the center.
The consultation and billing areas of the center were crowded due to the increase in viral diseases that has been recorded in recent days.
Cristina, a mother of two children, said that she has had to go to the hospital all week to treat one of her children, whose symptoms have not shown improvement.
“He has been like this since Wednesday. I brought him to collect the results and give them to the pulmonologist,” he added.
In the waiting room, dozens of relatives were waiting for clinical analyzes to be delivered to present them to specialists, who claim to receive a high number of patients with respiratory conditions.
Yenifer García, mother of a two-year-old child, indicated that her son’s respiratory problems have worsened, which is why he is still receiving instructions from his family doctor, who decided to perform other tests.
The director of the hospital, Dr. Mabel Jones, stated that, after the rains recorded, there was an increase in respiratory symptoms, especially in two-year-old children.
The specialist called on parents to prevent children from coming into contact with stagnant water that encourages the appearance of these viruses.
“We have respiratory syncytial virus. Since the rains began we have had a slight increase in this disease in the hospital, especially in the smaller childrens, before two years, that They are the ones who suffer most severely from this pathology“Jones said.
