China suspended the ban on purchasing Brazilian chicken meat, a measure adopted in May after the first record of contamination by bird flu, on a commercial farm in the municipality of Montenegro, Rio Grande do Sul..
The announcement of the suspension, made by the Chinese customs administration this Friday (7), was confirmed and celebrated by the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), which credited the result to “Brazil’s technical and diplomatic competence”.
“The suspension occurred in the context of the only recorded outbreak – and which has already been completely overcome – of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (IAAP) in the commercial production of chicken meat in Brazil”, recalls the association’s note.
The suspension of the purchase of the product, by China, was announced in Maywhen the country was, according to the association, the largest buyer of Brazilian chicken meat, with shipments of 562.2 thousand tons in 2024, around 10.8% of the total.

“Until May [de 2025]the month in which IAAP occurred, China was the largest importer of chicken meat from Brazil. Between January and May alone, the country had imported 228.2 thousand tons of chicken meat (10.4% of the total exported by Brazil until then), generating revenue of US$545.8 million”, detailed ABPA, after the announcement of the Chinese suspension.
On June 18th, the Brazil declared itself free of the disease after disinfection of the affected farm and not having registered any other case for a period of 28 days.

“Gradually, all major importers of chicken meat resumed purchases. Today, China, the last major importer of chicken meat closed, reopened its ports to the Brazilian product”, celebrated ABPA this Friday.
According to the entity, “the Brazilian authorities have dedicated extensive diplomatic efforts to reestablishing the commercial flow of suspended markets”, he stated, in a complimentary tone addressed to the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, his secretariat, as well as to Planalto and Itamaraty.
“There was extensive and highly professional negotiation work in this process, which included the renegotiation of health certificates to avoid total suspensions of countries in possible new occurrences”, he added, stating that the reopening “crowns the success” of these actions.
