Madrid/Havana/A week late – it usually happens on the last Thursday of each month – the United States sent its deportation flight to Cubaand on this occasion, with twice as many migrants as it normally returns. A total of 232 irregulars landed this Thursday in Havana, reported the Home Office in a statement published on their social networks.
In this, the tenth air operation recorded so far this year from the northern country, 189 men, 42 women and one minor were returned. Three of the deportees, the text adds, “were transferred to the investigative body for being alleged perpetrators of criminal acts before leaving the country.”
The Cuban authorities specified that so far there have been 38 returns of Cuban migrants from different nations in the region this year, totaling 1,376.
According to CBP data, during the fiscal period 2024, a total of 217,615 Cubans arrived in that country.
Likewise, they stressed that they ratify “their commitment to regular, safe and orderly migration,” while warning about the danger and life-threatening conditions that illegal departures from the country represent.
On the previous deportation flight, which arrived on the Island on September 26, former judge Melody Gonzálezknown for her actions in the trials against protesters on July 11, 2021, who was denied the asylum she had requested in the United States.
The Governments of Cuba and the United States have a bilateral agreement so that all migrants who arrive by sea in the United States are deported to the Caribbean country.
The deportation flights that had been suspended since 2020 were resumed at the end of April 2023, mainly for Cubans considered “inadmissible” after being detained on the border with Mexico.
According to data from the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), during the 2024 fiscal period a total of 217,615 Cubans arrived in that country, bringing the figure for the last four years to more than 860,000.
