The seventh day mass for the four police officers killed in Operation Containment, on October 28, in the Penha and Alemão complexes was celebrated this Thursday (6), in the amphitheater of the Theatro Municipal do Rio.
The four police officers killed in the operation were: inspector Marcus Vinicius de Carvalho, head of investigation at the Mesquita police station, in Baixada Fluminense; civil police officer Rodrigo Veloso Cabral, who had been appointed just 20 days ago and was stationed at the Pavuna police station; the soldier from the Special Operations Battalion (BOPE), Heber Carvalho da Fonseca, aged 39; and Bope sergeant, Cleiton Serafim Gonçalves, 37 years old.
The mass brought together family members, colleagues of police officers and military authorities and Governor Cláudio Castro.
Sergeant Cleiton’s wife, Graziele de Souza Serafim, said that before joining BOPE, Cleiton worked as a baker in the city of Mendes, in the interior of the state. He then joined the Municipal Guard of Volta Redonda, but his desire was always to be part of BOPE.
“He died in what he believed in. He really gave his life. He was the heart of our family. I try to hold on to that thought, that I know he wasn’t there thanks, but rather out of vocation”, he said.
Governor Cláudio Castro paid tribute to the police officers, whom he called “heroes”.
“We have a mission. The movement has just begun. There will be no setback. There will be no fear. And this fear will be transformed into courage”, he stated when referring to the repercussions after the operation.
According to the Secretary of the Military Police, Colonel Marcelo de Menezes, the main objective of the police action was not to “seek deaths”, but that the police will not “fade out, we will not back down and no one will stop us” in relation to the fight against criminal factions.
Rio’s Public Security Secretary, Victor dos Santos, said that “no death will be in vain” regarding the dead police officers.
The operation resulted in the deaths of 121 people, including four police officers. The police action against the Comando Vermelho faction is considered the largest in the state in the last 15 years and the most lethal in the country’s history.
