The Granma team won the 42nd National Women’s Softball Championship here today by defeating the host Villa Clara one race to nil in a match held in this city in central Cuba.
The team from the eastern Cuban province decided the match in their favor in the first inning due to a home run by Leadnelis Sayas over the walls of the 23 de Febrero stadium, venue of the tournament.
Granma pitcher Yilián Tornés limited the rivals for the crown to only two hits, while prescribing six strikeouts in seven innings.
Tornés, 30 years old, and one of the main softball pitchers in Cuba, finished the competition undefeated with eight wins, six of them in the qualifying round; an earned run average of 0.00 and 73 strikeout batters.
The team led by Rafael García finished the qualifying stage with 14 wins and a single setback at the hands of Santiago de Cuba.
With this crown, the Granma softball players maintain their reign in this country with 16 titles, ahead of Havana (12) and Villa Clara (8).
