Foreign Ministry began coordination with ONPE for general elections in 2026

The general director of Peruvian communities abroad and consular affairs of the ChancelleryPedro Bravo, announced that coordination has begun with the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) for the holding of the 2026 general elections abroad.

“We have started the coordination process together with the ONPE. We are a kind of arm of the ONPE in 118 consulates, where there will be electoral processes,” he indicated in RPP.

“Then, the essential thing is to foresee the voting places. There are places like Buenos Aires, Santiago, New York, Patterson, Los Angeles, Madrid, Barcelona, Milan, Rome, where we need to guarantee adequate spaces. It can be a large school, it can be a coliseum, a very large auditorium that allows, with all the security, the numerous Peruvians in those localities to exercise their right to vote,” he added.

The diplomat pointed out that the Foreign Ministry will request from Congress “the same facilities that other electoral organizations have” in logistical issues, such as contracting and bidding.

“Now we are going to have a very important distinctive element, which is that the IDs that were destroyed before, now have to be maintained, stored. And the chain of custody is going to be in charge of the consulates. So, they are going to have to implement some security measures. And then, the most expensive thing will probably be sending the IDs to the ONPE,” he stated.
