Double historical milestone in the National Army: the soldier Tiles Ipuana Yetzibelbelonging to the Wayúu ethnic group of La Guajira, became the first indigenous woman to provide her military service in an Army Aviation unit and was also recognized as the best of his battalion. Her story is an example of discipline, vocation and pride in representing her community in an institution traditionally dominated by men.

Tiles Ipuana decided to voluntarily enter military service in May 2024. She was assigned to the Aviation Supply and Services Battalion (BAAAS)where for 12 months he stood out for his commitment and sense of duty. Her performance not only broke barriers of gender and origin, but also paved the way for other young indigenous women to find an opportunity for training and leadership in the Military Forces.
His efforts were recently recognized with the “Juan Bautista Solarte Obando” medalone of the most important distinctions awarded by the Army to soldiers who stand out for their excellence, camaraderie and dedication. This recognition turned Ipuana into a symbol of improvement and pride for both its Wayúu people and the military institution.
The National Army highlighted in a statement that the presence of indigenous women strengthens cultural diversity within its ranks and reflects the entity’s commitment to inclusion and respect for the traditions of the country’s regions. “We are proud to have women who represent the diversity, culture and identity of Colombia,” said the institution.
Since her incorporation, Tiles has expressed that serving her country was a decision motivated by the desire to demonstrate that Wayúu women can achieve any goal. Her discipline led her to perform high-level logistical roles within the battalion, earning the respect of her superiors and colleagues for her dedication to each task.
