“We are continually pressuring Mexico to do more in the fight against drug trafficking and drug cartels, and we are working with them in any way we can,” White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said yesterday.
Asked about reports that President Donald Trump is preparing to send troops to Mexico, she indicated that “it is not something I would confirm from this podium if it were happening, so I will not comment on that.”
When asked if the president is satisfied with his Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheibaum, about the cartels and if after the murder of the mayor of Uruapan, Michoacán, Carlos Manzo, he opened new options in relation to them, he said: “first of all, regarding this specific news about this alleged assassination attempt that took place in Mexico, I know that the Trump administration is aware of that and, of course, we condemn all political violence anywhere and in all its forms.
“As for Claudia Sheinbaum and the president’s relationship with her, I think he has a lot of respect for her as President of Mexico, and also greatly appreciates the coordination she has provided to the Trump administration. I can’t speak for her or what she is doing internally in her country. I can speak for the president and say that we are continually pressuring Mexico to do more in the fight against drug trafficking and drug cartels within their country, and we are working with them in everything we can,” he indicated at a conference press.
He noted that Trump, “has obviously used the full range of executive options and his authorities to combat drug trafficking on our southern border and to designate these cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, in addition to other actions.”
