The train that covered the Havana-Sancti Spíritus route suffered a derailment this Wednesday morning near the Placetas municipality, Villa Clara.
The authorities confirmed that no injuries had been reported among the passengers or crew, as reported on Facebook by journalist Henry Omar Pérez, from the Cuban News Agency (ACN).
More than 80 passengers were on board and after the incident they were transferred by bus to their destination.
The event occurred at an approximate distance of 500 meters from the Cumbre station, according to Yaima Angel Hernández, President of the Municipal Defense Council.
The causes are under investigation by the competent agencies.
“The rapid updating of the Municipal Defense Council and the coordination between the different entities have allowed an effective response to the situation, prioritizing the safety and well-being of all those involved,” according to the journalist.
News about train derailments is frequent in Cuba and although their consequences are often minor, they are revealing about the current state of the railways.
Although authorities do not usually delve into the reason for these accidents, reports mainly point to damage to the roads, caused by maintenance problems and alleged acts of vandalism.
