Santo Domingo.– The president Luis Abinader sent to the National Congress observations on the Law 225-20 on solid waste management, with the purpose of guaranteeing a balance between free enterprise and environmental protection.
The modifications establish a 12 month period for the removal of single-use plastics and foam, except for packaging type “laptop”who will be 24 months old. There is also a year for businesses to charge for non-biodegradable plastic covers and promote the use of reusable bags.

The law also prohibits import of cutlery, calimetes and non-biodegradable plastic lids starting 60 days after its promulgation.
Abinader maintained that the observations seek avoid monopolistic practices, preserve municipal autonomy and foster a sustainable industry with technical and environmental criteria.
The Senate must hear the observations in accordance with article 102 of the Constitution and decide whether to accept or ratify the observed law.
