The Ministry of Public Education (SEP) presented the first national platform of microcredentials – short courses whose learning is verifiable – for life and work, SaberesMx, with which universities and Public Research Centers (CPI) will be able to offer short content for students, graduates and the general public, and grant academic recognition.

Within the framework of the National Meeting of Universities and Public Higher Education Institutions for the Transformation of Mexico, headed by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the Undersecretary of Higher Education, Ricardo Villanueva Lomelí, stated that SaberesMx, “is more than a technological tool.”

He highlighted that it will be a space in which universities, institutes and research centers will be able to build content for young university students and the general population of all ages.

Jobs that don’t exist yet

“It will be a place where graduates can return to update and reconvert throughout their lives,” as he assured that it is estimated that two-thirds of those who are entering the educational system “will have jobs that do not yet exist.”

Before the heads of the Secretariats of Public Education, Mario Delgado Carrillo, and Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation, Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez; rectors and directors of the CPI, gathered in the Patio del Trabajo of the SEP, detailed that the first content of SaberesMX will be available this November 17, and will address the prevention of addictions with a duration of 18 hours.

It is a course with more than 71 teaching tools such as videos, infographics and evaluations, and “we hope that 5.5 million students will take it,” said Villanueva Lomelí.

In this regard, the Secretaries of Education and Science agreed on the need to create a platform that promotes flexible and lifelong academic trajectories.

Rapid changes

Which also, they pointed out, forces universities to self-critically reflect on how to prepare future generations in a world of dizzying technological changes, where knowledge “is no longer linear or cumulative.”

For his part, the general director of the Polytechnic Institute, Arturo Reyes Sandoval, highlighted the importance of strengthening continuous training for all graduates, and the population in general, and offering an opportunity to provide an education “throughout life.”

Meanwhile, the rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas, recognized that higher education institutions face a great challenge, the “increasingly accelerated obsolescence of the knowledge taught,” which requires the generation of increasingly robust continuing education systems, and online education platforms that allow timely training.

Innovate drive for development

In the morning, before the arrival of the President, the head of the Ministry of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, announced the holding of the InnovaFest 2025a meeting that will bring together the most prominent scientists from Asia, Latin America and Mexico.

The Science and Technology in Society Forum will be held this December 4 at the Cuernavaca Convention Center, Morelos, where five strategic topics will be addressed: water security for human and agricultural consumption, which impacts food production; electromobility and development of adaptive urban centers; biotechnology and genomics; aeronautical, aerospace industry and promotion of entrepreneurship and innovation as drivers of the future.

One day later the InnovaFest LATAM 2025where a meeting of science ministers from the region is planned.
