MEF announces austerity measures for S/1,200 million to strengthen fiscal stability

Recently, the Fiscal Council warned that it is unlikely that in 2025, the Executive will comply with the fiscal rule of bringing the deficit to levels of 2.2% of GDP. This is due to the different spending initiatives without identified sources of income, approved by Congress in complicity with the Executive.

For this reason, the minister of Economy and FinanceDenisse Miralles stated that her portfolio has been preparing an emergency decree of fiscal efficiency to prioritize spending on projects with tangible impact and limit those that are not essential.

According to Miralles, these measures will allow an estimated saving of S/1,200 million in the next two months, which will strengthen the economic sustainability of the country.

“Simplifying is not improvising, it is ordering with intelligence and responsibility. Every public sol must generate results and employment. That is the route of a State that advances with stability and confidence,” he emphasized.

According to the Fiscal Council, Congress approved laws with spending initiatives for S/36,000 million and there are other projects underway that, if approved, will take public debt to levels of 70% of GDP in the next 10 years.

Collection

The minister highlighted that Peru remains among the five Latin American countries with a solid investment grade, supported by tax collection that grew 10.9% at the end of the third quarter. Thanks to this performance, tax revenues would reach S/173 billion at the end of the year, far exceeding the 2024 goal and reflecting renewed confidence in the stability and strength of the national economy.

“The State and the private sector are strategic allies to generate well-being and build the country. Let us continue closing ranks for a Peru that produces, that trusts and that progresses,” he concluded.

Citizen Security

At another time, the owner of the MEF He highlighted that the Executive has gone “from defensive to offensive in the face of crime,” by authorizing (through Supreme Decree No. 239-2025-EF) a transfer of more than S/48 million to the Public Ministry to strengthen its operational and logistical capacity in the fight against organized crime.

“The Government of President José Jerí has as a priority guaranteeing the security and tranquility of Peruvian families. From the MEF we are ensuring the necessary resources for the Public Ministry to act effectively in defense of citizens,” said the minister during her speech at the meeting with business associations.

Miralles specified that strengthening security goes hand in hand with an agenda of simplification and efficiency in public management. In that sense, he announced the promotion of a debureaucratization shock aimed at eliminating, simplifying and unblocking procedures that do not add value, in order to release productive energies and accelerate private and public investment.
