Valle Health Secretariat warns of deadly risks of alcohol challenges

The death of a young woman in Cali after a drinking challenge sparked an alert about excessive alcohol consumption at parties and clubs.

The death of María José Ardila, The 23-year-old girl who died after ingesting a large amount of liquor in the middle of a challenge, set off the alarms of the health authorities of the department of Valle del Cauca.

The case, occurred at the Sagsa nightclub, put on the table the debate on the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption, especially when it becomes part of challenges or competitions.

Given what happened, the Secretary of Health of the Valley, María Cristina Lesmes, issued a warning to the community to avoid practices that put life at risk.

“Excessive alcohol can cost your life. When you drink excessively and rapidly, andThe body cannot process alcohol. What there is is a mixture that can cause loss of consciousness, vomiting, respiratory failure and even cardiac arrest,” he said.

Likewise, the official rejected the so-called challenges that circulate on social networks, which are practiced in some night establishments where Money is awarded to whoever consumes the most liquor in the least time.

They are absurd activities that are done for money or popularity, without considering the enormous risk to which they are exposed. “It is necessary for families to talk to their children and reflect on the consequences of these decisions,” he added.

Health authorities reiterated that acute alcohol poisoning is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention. Therefore, they insisted on maintain hydration, do not mix drinks and go immediately to a healthcare center if you experience any symptoms of dizziness, loss of consciousness or difficulty breathing.

The case of María José has become a wake-up call about the need to promote self-care and responsibility in alcohol consumptionespecially during celebrations and social gatherings where excess can have an irreversible outcome.

And in the middle of the challenge, the young woman fainted, vomited, inhaled and stopped breathing for 17 minutes, -without receiving first aid- which severely aggravated his health situation.
