EBC and COC/Fiocruz team up on a podcast about the health of the planet

In the month of the 30th Conference of the UN Parties on Climate Change (COP30), in Belém, Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC) and Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (COC/Fiocruz) launch the podcast SOS! Earth Calling!an unprecedented co-production, with 13 episodes, that combines science and public communication to address the environmental emergencies that threaten the planet. And all this in an accessible and engaging way. The premiere will be this Monday (3), with an exhibition on MEC Radioat 10:30 pm. On Tuesday (4), it will be the turn of the attraction to be shown on National Radioat 11pm.EBC and COC/Fiocruz team up on a podcast about the health of the planet

There will be weekly episodes, broadcast on both channels at the same times. Every Wednesday, the content will be available on the EBCon Spotify and YouTube, accompanied by complementary materials. The strategy also includes distribution across more than 160 radio stations in the National Public Communication Network (RNCP)coordinated by EBC.

Conceived, scripted and presented by the journalist from EBC Adrielen Alves, the podcast proposes an innovative approach by combining elements of documentary and radio soap opera. The series presents a narrative whose protagonists are “Mrs. Earth”, a patient in serious condition, and “Dr. Cruz”, who seeks to understand and treat the symptoms of an ill planet.

“The idea arose just over a year ago, from a combination of factors. The first was the urgency in addressing climate change, given the increase in extreme weather events in Brazil and around the world and the growing wave of denialism and fake news regarding the topic. From the opportunity for partnership and joint efforts of public companies that are leaders in public communication and science (EBC and COC/Fiocruz), I decided to deepen research into the health of planet Earth”, explains the journalist.

The production features research and production by Anita Lucchesi and Teresa Santos, content editing by Julianne Gouveia and review by Ana Elisa Santana. There is also a voiceover of excerpts and works by Thiago Regotto, executive radio manager at EBC. The cast includes actors Georgiana Góes and Pablo Aguilar, from the Museu da Vida Fiocruz. The series also has technical support from professionals from EBC in Brasília, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and final editing and sound design by Pipoca Sound.

The technical-scientific committee responsible for reviewing the content is made up of researchers Carlos Machado de Freitas (ENSP/Fiocruz), Carlos Henrique Assunção Paiva, Diego Vaz Bevilaqua, Dilene Raimundo do Nascimento and Magali Romero Sá (COC/Fiocruz), in addition to Tereza Amorim Costa (Museu da Vida Fiocruz).

Among the more than 20 experts interviewed are prominent names in Brazilian science, such as climatologist Carlos Nobre, environmentalist Ailton Krenak, astronomer Simone Daflon (National Observatory) and researcher Dominichi Miranda de Sá (Casa de Oswaldo Cruz). The conversations cover topics such as climate change, the anthropocene, climate justice, environmental mourning, ecological awareness and future perspectives for the planet.

“The main message of SOS! Earth Calling! is that planet Earth is in emergency. We need to talk and understand more about the history of the Earth and humanity to understand that our species is responsible for the revolutions that are leading to a scarcity of natural resources, altering natural cycles and causing deaths, hunger and extreme risk situations, especially for the most vulnerable countries and communities. As our main character says throughout the series, ‘Earth’, ‘it’s all interconnected’! The call is urgent: the health of the Earth is our health!”, highlights Adrielen.

The launch, which takes place the week before COP30, speaks directly to the environmental discussions that will place Brazil at the center of global attention. The date chosen for the launch of the podcast, World One Health Day, also references the interconnection between the health of humans, animals and all ecosystems.

“Since the project’s conception, the objective has always been to launch it on the eve of COP30, the moment when all eyes and attention are focused on Brazil and the country’s leadership potential in the energy transition and combating environmental degradation,” concludes Adrielen Alves.
