Teacher strike in Boca Chica: students affected in 55 schools

Huelga docente en Boca Chica: estudiantes afectados en 55 escuelas

Classes were paralyzed today for three days in 55 schools in the municipality of Boca Chica, in the province of Santo Domingo, by order of the section of the Dominican Association of Teachers (ADP), which demands, among other demands, “adequate and safe working conditions for teaching.”

The strike, which affects 43,000 students in that community, was immediately rejected by the authorities of the Ministry of Education and ordered the teachers to comply with the school calendar.

In a statement issued on October 31, the ADP branch in Boca Chica complained that “many educational centers show marked deterioration in their infrastructure, requiring urgent repairs and renovations.”

He added that, in several cases, construction has been paralyzed for years, with only 85 and 60% progress, without having been completed.

“These deficiencies limit the teaching-learning process and put the physical integrity of students, teachers, administrative and support staff at risk,” the teachers union continued.

However, the union does not indicate which schools are in poor condition or the conditions in which they are found.

The schedule of the union’s fight plan began this Monday. It was approved at a teachers’ assembly last October 30.

From the 5th to the 7th of this month, teachers will remain in front of the educational centers from 8:00 to 10:00 in the morning without entering the classrooms.

“If we do not obtain a tangible response from the competent authorities, this fight plan will be extended next week, incorporating new phased actions that will be communicated in a timely manner,” the union insisted.

The management of the educational district 10-05, based in Boca Chica, stated that they have met several times with the management of the ADP in that municipality, with the aim of avoiding the paralysis of schools.

In a statement addressed to the educational community, Hallen Guerrero, District Director, stated that she also met with Carlos Martínez, Francis Zapata and Miguel Martínez, members of the school infrastructure team of the Ministry of Education, with the aim of addressing the issues that motivate the conflict with the ADP.

“During the meeting, the actions and guidelines that have been developed in a coordinated manner between the school infrastructure team and this educational district to sustain a new one were reviewed, which were temporarily suspended due to the weather conditions recorded last week,” the statement says.

He reported that, for tomorrow, Tuesday, a new meeting was called with the ADP section “in order to continue the dialogue and the joint work that has been carried out for the benefit of the community for the benefit of the educational community.”

“This Educational district reiterates its position of disagreement with the fight plan proposed by the ADP section,” he insisted.
