After the collapse of one of the roofs of the PNP Surquillo police station, located in block 4 of Jirón San Diego, the Comptroller General of the Republic warned of serious deficiencies in infrastructure, basic services and working conditions in a large part of the police stations in the country.
In the Sunday newspaper of Cuarto Poder, the head of the Police Infrastructure area, Major PNP Miguel Alarcón, reported that more than 10 police stations are at high risk of collapseso it is urgently requested to declare an emergency.
Among them, Surquillo, Piedra Liza (Rímac), Pamplona 1, Villa Chorrillos, Lurín, Petit Thouars, San Pedro, San Lorenzo de Quinti (Huarochiri), San Vicente de Cañete and the DEPINCRI of Cercado de Limewhich have fractured columns, cracks in walls, ceilings about to give way and inoperative bathrooms.
For example, in the Piedra Liza police stationpolice officers must receive complaints on public roads due to lack of space. After a tour with Congressman Alfredo Azurín, it was found that the police station shares premises with a hair salon and has been declared uninhabitable, the water pressure is not optimal, there are exposed cables and no spaces for detainees.
In Surquillopart of the roof collapsed a few weeks ago, leaving three injured. In other cases, like in Independencia, the doors creak, there is no electricity and the patrol cars are abandoned.
In this regard, the Comptroller’s Office began with a close visit to 200 police stations out of 466where he identified that between the 30% and 40% were declared uninhabitable by the municipal authorities themselves due to their age and deterioration.
In some cases, the agents do not have computers, radio batteries or basic materialswhich directly affects the ability to patrol and respond to emergencies.
According to Luis Castillo, political and institutional control manager of the Comptroller’s Office, of the almost 960 million soles assigned to the PNP for investments, only 20% has been executed. “Resources must be redirected,” the official indicated.
