BARAHONA.- Barahona had its remembrance of the Flood on Sunday, with rainwater running through the streets, ravines and overflowing rivers, avalanches in El Derrumbao and spas damaged with water, earth and garbage carried away in large quantities.
Through the streets of Villa Central, in the part of the city where the maternal and child hospital is being built, more water flowed yesterday than through some rivers during storm season.
The torrential downpours began to occur early Sunday morning, as a result of a trough at altitude and the passage of a tropical wave, according to information from the Institute of Meteorology.
Among the points that deserved special attention yesterday were Villa Central, El Derrumbao, Villa Mirian spa, the boardwalk, the market and the La Playa and Villa Estela neighborhoods. This unusual situation led the mayor’s office to work in coordination with the Fire Department to mitigate the effects of flooding in some streets.
In at least the Lisandra Aponte school, formerly El Virán, a wall collapsed and the relief authorities had to dedicate themselves to the evacuation of families in several seriously affected sectors.
The rains caused by the tropical wave and the trough at altitude found the soils of Barahona saturated with moisture from the recent waters of Storm Melissa, which kept some parts of the country without seeing the sun for consecutive days before quickening its pace and heading towards Jamaica, which has become a category 5 hurricane.
