The US State Department reported that humanitarian assistance will go directly to those most affected in eastern Cuba.
LIMA, Peru – The United States announced that it is coordinating with the Catholic Church in Cuba the distribution of humanitarian aid intended to support those affected by Hurricane Melissa in eastern Cuba.
The US State Department, from its Office of Western Hemisphere Affairs, reported this Sunday via X (formerly Twitter) that this is three million dollars in humanitarian assistance that will go directly to those most affected.
“Our prayers are with the brave Cuban people,” underlines the publication, also published by the official account of the US Embassy in Havana.
The news comes a few days after the US secretary of state, Marco Rubioannounced on social networks that his country was “prepared to offer immediate humanitarian aid to the Cuban people affected by the hurricane” and was rejected by senior officials of the Castro regime.
The issue comes in the midst of a devastating panorama in the east of the Island, where, although the authorities have not yet offered a detailed official report of damages, images abound of destroyed homes, entire communities under water, people who have lost everything, and emergency evacuations.
The powerful hurricane hit Cuba with category three from the early morning until the afternoon of Wednesday, October 29, specifically in the eastern region.
Last Thursday, the US State Department also issued a statement in which it already reaffirmed its willingness to offer immediate humanitarian assistance to the Cuban people affected by Hurricane Melissa. Washington expressed its solidarity with the affected families and reiterated that its support is directed directly to Cuban citizens, not to the regime.
The statement emphasizes that the North American country maintains its commitment to human rights and the freedom of the people of Cuba, and that it will continue to coordinate with international partners and humanitarian organizations to guarantee that any aid reaches those who need it most in a transparent and effective manner.
To coordinate support initiatives or request additional information, the State Department enabled email [email protected].
The aftermath of Melissa has aggravated the severe economic crisis that Cuba is going through, which keeps the population enduring prolonged blackouts, as well as shortages of fuel, medicine and food.
