Petro questions that the OAS does not study US attacks on boats in the Caribbean and Pacific

Colombia Visas EEUU

Gustavo Petro questioned the absence of precautionary measures from the Human Rights Commission in Washington and wondered if the American Convention on Human Rights only serves “against Latin American and Caribbean states.”

The Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, questioned this Saturday, November 1, that the Organization of American States (OAS) does not meet to study the United States attacks against vessels in the Caribbean and the Pacific, supposedly linked to drug trafficking, which have left more than 60 dead.

“If the Trump government is violating international law by attacking people with immense disproportionate force in the Caribbean Sea, that is, they are extrajudicial executions as the UN says, why doesn’t the OAS meet to study this problem of systematic violation of Human Rights in the Caribbean?” expressed Petro in X.

Petro questioned the absence of precautionary measures from the Human Rights Commission in Washington and wondered if the American Convention on Human Rights only serves “against Latin American and Caribbean states.”

The Colombian president’s statements come after the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, pointed out on Friday that the people on board the boats were victims of “extrajudicial executions” and that such actions must stop “regardless of the alleged crimes they are accused of.”

The United States government deployed a military operation in the Caribbean and the Pacific to fight against drug trafficking cartels. More than 12 boats loaded with suspected drugs have been sunk and around 60 people have died in these actions since September.

The Maduro administration has denounced the actions of Donald Trump and has indicated that the only interest of the North American government is to promote a regime change in Venezuela.
