The boxes Municipal savings and credit institutions (CMAC) are in a very favorable situation in terms of the management of their credit portfolios, reduction of costs, results and profitability, assured the SBS. For this reason, the regulator urged them to be cautious regarding the offer of new products that, due to lack of knowledge, could lead them to reverse their expected situation.
“The challenge is to be aware and avoid getting involved in businesses that could put at risk the good performance they already have in the activities they know well,” said Jorge Mogrovejo, deputy superintendent of Banking and Microfinance at the SBS, at the XVI CIM Microfinance Congress Iquitos 2025.
Mogrovejo highlighted that, on the placement side, CMACs have been growing with a controlled level of risk. He maintained that as of September, the loan portfolio registered an interannual growth of 8.2% and the portfolio at risk of non-payment represented around 10%, in line with the segment of the population to which
is heading.
He highlighted that, to date, even the smallest savings banks register profits, which provides peace of mind to all savers. For this reason, he insisted that they not be carried away by optimism and carefully evaluate the products they seek to provide.
Thus, he referred to the possibility of managing pension funds by the CMACs. He said that it is a business that requires having a treasury team that allows them to choose the best alternatives to invest people’s pension savings.
“The important question (that CMACs should ask themselves) is: do I want to spend a lot on developing a product for which I am not sure how much it will give me, because beware, everything costs,” he concluded.
