The president of the republic, José Jeríspoke by telephone on Thursday with the Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio.

According to the Presidency’s account, both officials “ratified the will of both countries to strengthen their strategic partnership, deepen cooperation in citizen security and the fight against transnational organized crime.”

Likewise, it was reported that “security and defense issues were also addressed.”

“They committed to maintaining high-level meetings, in order to continue working on issues of mutual interest on the broad bilateral agenda shared by Peru and the United States,” the publication states.

According to the United States Embassy in Lima, the Secretary of State “highlighted the enduring ties between the United States and Peru, established over almost 200 years of diplomatic relations.”

Rubio “underscored the importance of strengthening security cooperation and supporting Peru’s initiatives to fight crime in our hemisphere.”

“Both leaders agreed to continue close cooperation on common priorities, including the fight against drug trafficking and strengthening regional stability,” the statement said.
