After three years of waiting, Brazil once again has a representative at the WTA Finals, which starts this Saturday (31), in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), with the best tennis players of the season. In the doubles tournament, the country will have Luisa Stefani from São Paulo in partnership with Hungary’s Timea Babos among the eight who will compete for the title of best of the year. This is the second time that a Brazilian competes in the traditional event that marks the end of the tennis season – the first was Beatriz Haddad Maia from São Paulo, in 2022, in partnership with Kazakh Anna Danilina.
Stefani and Babos (seed 7) will have quite a challenge in their debut on Sunday (2). They will face the pair of American Taylor Townsend and Czech Katerina Siniaková (seed 2), champion of the Australian Open. The start of the match is scheduled for 1:40 pm (Brasília time).

Stefani’s group, titled Liezel Huber (a tribute to the 49-year-old former South African tennis player), also includes the pair of Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski with New Zealander Erin Routliffe (seed 3) and the Russian partnership of Diana Shnaider with Mirra Andreeva (seed 3). The other four pairs are in the Martina Navratilova Group (check all the participants at the end of the text).
According to the regulations, the pairs face each other within the bracket. The best two will go to the semifinals.
The duo Stefani and Babos were the seventh best of the year after winning three titles: the WTA 250 SP Open, in the capital of São Paulo, and two other WTA 500 – Linz (Austria) and Strasbourg (France).
Singles tournament
World number 1 and top scorer of the year, Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka is looking for an unprecedented Finals title. The current champion, the North American Coco Gauff (3rd best of the year) will defend the title. The two are in the Group called Steffi Graff, along with the North American Jessica Pegula (6th) and the Italian Jasmine Paolini (7th).
The other group, named Serena Williams, features the Polish Iga Swiatek (2nd), the North American Amanda Anisimova (4th), the Russian Elena Rybakina (8th) who represents Kazakhstan, and the North American Madison Keys (5th).
Just like in the doubles tournament, in the singles competition the tennis players from each group will compete against each other. The best two will advance to the semifinals.
