Traveling by train in Colombia is once again a reality. After decades of abandonment, the rails that once connected towns, mountains and coasts are coming back to life thanks to projects that combine tourism, culture and sustainability. The most recent example is the Train of Life and Hopea route that runs through Boyacá with luxury, charm and affordable prices.
After more than 50 years without passenger service, the train once again traveled through the landscapes of Boyacá. Connecting the municipalities of Nobsa, Sogamoso, Duitama and Paipathis route offers a unique experience where railway history is combined with modern comfort. The project is part of a national strategy led by the Ministry of Transportation and the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI)with an investment greater than 90 billion pesosaimed at revitalizing six railway corridors throughout the country. During the inauguration, the Minister of Transportation, Maria Fernanda Rojashighlighted that this train “not only promotes tourism, but also local development and the sense of belonging of the communities.”
He Train of Life and Hope It was restored with care that respects its historical essence. The carriages retain original ceilings, wood finishes and warm lighting, while integrating contemporary amenities such as air conditioning and renovated bathrooms. The tour lasts approximately three hourswith departure at 4:00 p.m. and return to 7:00 p.m. Although the technical trip starts from Nobsa, the journey with passengers begins in Sogamouscontinue towards Duitama and ends in Paipawhere travelers can visit attractions such as the Acerías Paz del Río Steel Museum and enjoy the typical Boyaca gastronomy.
Tourism on rails as an economic engine
At each station, visitors find cultural activities, crafts and gastronomic samples that reflect regional identity. According to local media reports, the initiative has generated employment, boosted family businesses and strengthened domestic tourism. For residents, seeing the train moving again is a symbol of progress and pride.
The rebirth of the tourist train not only represents a travel alternative, but also an opportunity to rediscover the country from a slower and more contemplative perspective.
