Gleisi says right-wing politicians want the US to intervene in Brazil

The chief minister of the federal government’s Institutional Relations Secretariat, Gleisi Hoffmann, criticized the position of governors from right-wing parties who, according to her, divide the country and contribute to the discourse of United States intervention in Latin American countries.Gleisi says right-wing politicians want the US to intervene in Brazil

For her, governors should join the federal government in proposing solutions that strengthen public security. Gleisi cited the Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) 18, known as PEC of Public Securitypresented by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to Congress.

“Instead of joining forces in the fight against organized crime, as proposed by the Security PEC sent by President Lula to Congress, the right-wing governors, voiced by Ronaldo Caiado, invest in political division and want to put Brazil on the radar of Donald Trump’s military interventionism in Latin America”, said the minister on social media, this Friday.

The president of the United States has already made military moves in the southern hemisphere. He has positioned ships in the Caribbean Sea, close to Venezuela, with the argument of combating drug trafficking. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has claimed, however, that the US wants to remove him from power.

She compared these governors to federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), who has been living in the United States since March. He is accused in Brazil of promoting trade sanctions by President Donald Trump’s government against Brazilian exports, application of the Magnisky Law and the suspension of visas for Court ministers and members of the federal government.

“They cannot hide their desire to hand over the country to foreigners, in the same way that Eduardo Bolsonaro and his family of traitors to the country did with tariffs and Magnitsky,” he said.

“Public security is a very important issue, which cannot be treated lightly and for electoral purposes. Fighting crime requires intelligence, planning and combined efforts”, he added.

“Peace Consortium”

Seven governors announced this Thursday (30) the creation of the Peace Consortiuman integration project to exchange intelligence information, provide financial and police support in the fight against organized crime.

They met in Rio de Janeiro, with governor Cláudio Castro (PL), governors Romeu Zema (Novo), from Minas Gerais; Jorginho Mello (PL), from Santa Catarina; Eduardo Riedel (Progressistas), from Mato Grosso do Sul; Ronaldo Caiado (União Brasil), from Goiás; and the vice-governor of the Federal District, Celina Leão (Progressistas). The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), participated remotely, via video call.

All governors present praised the results of the police action in the Penha and Alemão complexes. For Romeu Zema, the operation should be “considered the most successful”. “Rio de Janeiro’s security forces carried out, in my understanding, an operation that will be part of public security in Brazil,” he said.

The operation resulted in the deaths of 121 peopleincluding four military police officers, seized 93 rifles and caused chaos in the city, with road closures. The previously announced main objective was the capture of Edgar Alves de Andrade, known as Doca, considered the main leader of the criminal faction Comando Vermelho. However, he was not arrested in the operation and remains at large.

PEC of Public Security

PEC 18, presented by the federal government, has been criticized by these same governors. The group argues that the text takes away their autonomy over state police. “The sole objective of the federal government is to take away from the governors the general guidelines for public security, which is a determination that the Constitution of 88 gave us. They want to transfer our autonomy and transform it into a general guideline for the Ministry of Justice. It is direct intervention in the state police”, stated the governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado.

The proposal establishes that the Union is responsible for developing the national public security policy, “whose guidelines will be mandatory for federated entities, after consulting the National Council for Public Security and Social Defense, made up of representatives from the Union, the States, the Federal District and the Municipalities”. The federal government has argued that the PEC maintains the autonomy of state and district security forces.
