Yon Goicochea pointed out on the social network X that he has not been given his documents in Venezuela for years. This is the second opponent that the Maduro administration threatens to strip of his nationality
The Ministry of the Interior, Justice and Peace requested this Friday, October 31, from the Supreme Court of Justice, the withdrawal of Venezuelan nationality from opposition leader Yon Goicochea.
According to the statement published on its Instagram account, the organization explained that the measure is requested due to a public call that the opponent would have made to supposedly request the cooperation of “foreign forces for the military invasion and occupation of Venezuela, persecute and exterminate officials of the different security bodies and the Bolivarian National Armed Forces, as well as the mass murder of Venezuelans who are part of the Popular Power movements and organizations,” the entity said in the statement.
The office directed by Diosdado Cabello instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Saime to “take administrative measures to eliminate any document that identifies him as a Venezuelan citizen.”
Before a post onpreviously made by the politician Luis Ratti about the withdrawal of Goichochea’s nationality, he responded: «Clown, they won’t let me go to Venezuela because I’m in prison. They haven’t given me Venezuelan documents for years. What are they going to take from me? My feeling? Being born in Venezuela? They have no power for that, you are a sad clown and soon a clown, sad and imprisoned.
Goicochea is the second Venezuelan politician whom the Maduro administration threatens to strip of his nationality. The first was Leopoldo López, founder of Voluntad Popular.
There is also an attempt to withdraw his nationality due to “his grotesque, criminal and illegal call for the military invasion of Venezuela, permanent promotion of the economic blockade, as well as the call to mass murder Venezuelans in complicity with foreign governments and enemies,” as reported by Vice President Delcy Rodríguez on October 25 on her Telegram account.
Laws are violated
It is worth noting that the Maduro administration’s attempts to strip the nationality of two of its political adversaries violates the Constitution. In its article 35, the fundamental text states: «Venezuelans by birth may not be deprived of their nationality. “Venezuelan nationality through naturalization can only be revoked by judicial ruling, in accordance with the law.”
The Liberator Simón Bolívar Organic Law also does not establish the revocation of nationality and what it contemplates are sanctions such as political disqualification and confiscation of assets for those who support international sanctions.
In the Nationality and Citizenship Law, in its article 12, it also states that the nationality of a Venezuelan cannot be removed. The text reads: “Venezuelan nationality by birth may not be revoked or suspended, nor in any other way diminished or deprived by any authority.”
The Maduro administration’s announcements have been rejected for violating not only national laws, but international law.
*Journalism in Venezuela is carried out in a hostile environment for the press with dozens of legal instruments in place to punish the word, especially the laws “against hate”, “against fascism” and “against the blockade.” This content was written taking into consideration the threats and limits that, consequently, have been imposed on the dissemination of information from within the country.
