Megaoperation in Rio fulfilled 20 of the 100 intended arrest warrants

Ministers will hold emergency meeting with Castro this Wednesday

Operation Containment carried out 20 of the 100 arrest warrants that motivated the action. Furthermore, at least 15 other people who were targets of these court orders were killed during the action. The information was released this Friday (31), by the Public Security Secretariat and Civil Police Secretariat of Rio de Janeiro. Megaoperation in Rio fulfilled 20 of the 100 intended arrest warrants

In total, 113 arrests were made. According to the Secretary of Civil Police, Felipe Curi, the remaining arrests were made in the act and all arrests were maintained after a custody hearing.

Main target, Edgar Alves de Andrade, known as Doca, remains at large. He is considered the main leader of the Red Command who is not in prison.

Among the most important arrests made is that of Doca’s financial operator, which, according to Rio de Janeiro’s Secretary of Public Security, Victor Santos, associated with the seizure of hard drives and other materials, will contribute to the investigation into Comando Vermelho’s money laundering.

121 dead

Operation Containment, carried out this Tuesday (28), in the Alemão and Penha complexes, had a force of 2,500 police officers and is the largest carried out in the state and also the most lethal.

The state recognizes 121 deaths, four of them police officers, and admits that the number could still increase. According to civil society organizations, the total number of deaths in the operation has already exceeded 130.

The objective of the operation was, according to the state government, to contain the advance of Comando Vermelho, executing 180 search and seizure warrants and 100 arrest warrants.

Of these 100 arrest warrants, 30 were issued by the state of Pará. Five of them were among those who were actually arrested and 15 were killed. Another ten remain at large.

Bodies identified

Of the total of 121 people killed, according to Curi, 99 have been identified so far. Of these, 78 had, according to the secretary, a criminal history and 42 had an outstanding arrest warrant. According to the secretary, it is not yet possible to know whether these outstanding warrants had been issued in this operation or previously.

The difficulty in identification also lies in the fact that some of the people killed were from other states. According to Curi, so far, 40 people identified are from other states such as Pará, Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, Paraíba, Goiás, Mato Grosso and Espírito Santo.

The secretary also highlights that policing in the Complexo da Penha and Alemão regions continues to be reinforced.
