Havana/Some 1,400 people residing in the town of Guamo, Granma, have been emergency evacuated due to the abrupt flooding of the Cauto River and runoff that causes flooding, as well as the possibility of the dam overflowing as a result of the rains that Hurricane Melissa left in Cuba this Wednesday.
The decision has taken residents to Jobabo, in Las Tunas, and it is expected that more people will continue to arrive throughout the day, up to 5,000 or 7,000 according to some reports, as residents of Cauto Embaradero, Melones and Cayama join, said the local Las Tunas station Radio Cabaniguán.
The authorities have warned the population of “extreme danger” and insist on the message that they do not return to their homes until instructed to do so, since some people who have tried have ended up having to be rescued.
