Ideam announced the end of monitoring Hurricane Melissa, but asked not to lower our guard against the possible formation of new cyclones.
The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam) reported that monitoring of Hurricane Melissa endedafter this phenomenon presented a process of weakening and distancing itself from Colombian territory, reducing its intensity to category 1.
The information was communicated as part of the updates issued by the Tropical Cyclone Alert Technical Table, in charge of coordinating the observation and analysis of these events.
The Ideam pointed out that The current status of the system is “monitoring closure.”not representing a direct threat to the country. However, the entity recommended to the population pay attention to official reports and continue to be vigilant during the remainder of the hurricane season, which is still active in the Caribbean area.
Despite the weakening of Melissa, meteorological authorities warned that new tropical systems could form in the coming weekswhich is why they insisted on the importance of don’t let your guard down and follow the preventive measures established by monitoring organizations.
Oceanic and atmospheric conditions continue to be conducive to the appearance of other phenomena of this type. The monitoring of Hurricane Melissa was a joint effort in which several national entities participatedamong them the General Maritime Directorate (Dimar), the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), the Civil Aeronautics and the Colombian Aerospace Force.
These institutions share technical information and coordinate alerts that allow them to anticipate possible impacts on the territory.
With the closure of monitoring, the authorities highlighted the importance of maintaining preparation throughout the season, remembering that constant surveillance allows us to reduce risks and act in advance in the event of the eventual formation of new hurricanes or storms in the region.
