HOLY SUNDAY. – The Dominican Government ratified this Thursday its solidarity with the Guatemalan people and his absolute support for President Bernardo Arévalorecognized as the legitimate winner of the 2023 general electionselections validated as transparent by international observers.
During a virtual intervention before the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS)the chancellor Roberto Alvarez warned that recent judicial actions seeking not knowing the election results and declaring vacant elected positions in Guatemala represent a serious violation of sovereignty of that country and to the principles of Inter-American Democratic Charter.
“No power of the State can impose itself on the legitimacy that emanates from the popular will,” stated Álvarez, citing previous statements by the Dominican president. Luis Abinader.

The diplomat was emphatic when pointing out that Dominican Republic will not recognize any de facto government that arises as a consequence of a breakdown in the constitutional order in the Central American nation.

Álvarez called on the States of the hemisphere to not be indifferent against any attempt to break democracy, whether in Guatemala or in another country in the region. In that sense, he urged the OAS to use all the tools available to accompany the Guatemalan government in the defense of the democratic system.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs was accompanied in this session by the Vice Minister of Multilateral Foreign Policy, Ruben Silié; the director of Strategic Studies and Analysis, Anselmo Muñiz; and the advisor Jatzel Roman.
