National trips will resume “when conditions allow” after the passage of Melissa

The fury of Melissawhich is now advancing towards Bermuda with category 2, left the national train, bus and flight systems in eastern Cuba completely inoperative.

Now, the Ministry of Transportation evaluates the state of the road and logistics infrastructure to resume services “in the shortest time possible.”

In the railway sector, all national and local passenger trains with origin or destination in Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, Holguín and Bayamo-Manzanillo remain cancelled, according to a report by Minister Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila in Facebook.

The scheduled suspensions include this Thursday, October 30, with train No. 13 (Havana-Guantánamo) and No. 16 (Holguín-Havana); and on October 31, No. 11 (Havana-Santiago de Cuba) and No. 18 (Manzanillo-Bayamo-Havana).

According to Rodríguez Dávila, specialized personnel from the Railway Transportation Administration and the Cuban Railway Union carry out a comprehensive inspection of the tracks, identifying damages to initiate repairs and certify safety before any restart.

National bus services, including the Viazul fleet and cargo transfers, remain suspended until today to the provinces of Camagüey, Las Tunas, Holguín, Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo.

To determine the feasibility of safe circulation, Mitrans teams will verify the condition of the roads, the official said.

In the case of aviation, the international airports Antonio Maceo in Santiago de Cuba and Frank País in Holguín maintain all national and international operations suspended.

Likewise, forces from the Cuban Civil Aeronautics Institute evaluate runways, terminals and air navigation systems with the aim of reestablishing flights once operability is guaranteed.

Rodríguez Dávila represented a positive advance in maritime transport, since as of today the passenger connection between Gerona (Isla de la Juventud), Batabanó and Cayo Largo del Sur resumes, thanks to the improvement in meteorological conditions in that area.

For all affected modes of transportation, passengers with reservations are entitled to a full 100% ticket refund up to 15 days after suspension. You can also reschedule your trip by contacting the commercial offices of the companies (Traveler for maritime, and the corresponding ones for automobile and rail), depending on availability of seats.

In the recovery phase, already decreed, the National Road Center, together with its provincial directorates, will begin with the evaluation of bridges, roads and signs to design an immediate intervention strategy.

In a special way, Mitrans thus makes its human and technical resources available for the transfer of construction brigades, doctors, food and essential materials requested by local authorities in the impacted provinces.
