A rescue day ended in tragedy at the Santa Filomena mine, located in the district of Sancos (province of Lucanas, Ayacucho). Four workers died inside a sinkhole after entering the tunnel in search of a missing colleague. Everything indicates that they lost consciousness after inhaling gases accumulated in the gallery.

The incident would have originated in the early morning of October 25, when Rosmel Saúl Quispe Mendoza informed his partner that he had gotten lost in the mine and could not find his way out. From that moment on he did not answer calls again. Days later, a strong smell alerted other workers, who descended into the shaft—about 60 meters deep—without breathing equipment, becoming trapped.
