Greater spending on security reduces productivity

Peru requires improving security spending

The insecurity It continues to hit the country and also the economy. The Public Policy Manager of the Peruvian Institute of Economics (IPE), Víctor Fuentes, warned that the greater spending made to combat this problem generates less productivity of people.

In that sense, he recalled that while in Chile productivity per hour worked is approximately US$33.7, in Colombia it amounts to US$18.7, and in Peru it barely reaches US$13.2.

“We also have households that allocate more money for security instead of doing so for something like education, for example,” he added.

In that sense, he pointed out that in Metropolitan Lima, the percentage of households that purchased surveillance cameras rose from 13% in 2023 to 14% in 2024. The same thing happened with those who hired a private security guard, which went from 13% to 14%.

“There are others who have resorted to the community alarm system, access control to the place where it is located, and those who rely on neighborhood councils,” he explained.

For this reason, he pointed out that it is necessary to work to reduce the levels of insecurity in the country, with measures that put a stop to this scourge.

“We have to reduce insecurity, but we also have to work to insert young people who cannot find a job into the labor market,” he explained.

PUBLIC EXPENDITURE

The public sector has more than S/4.3 billion for investment projects related to public order and security. According to the Friendly Consultation portal of the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), to date 72% of that total has been disbursed.

However, there are some local governments such as Ucayali, which have only spent 4.9% of the more than S/17 million allocated. Ica, for its part, registers an advance of 22.6% and Madre de Dios of 24.2%.
