Students from the National Pedagogical University (UPN) began an “indefinite academic strike” yesterday afternoon at the Ajusco unit in Mexico City demanding that there be a written response to their request list, and that a dialogue be established with the rector Rosa María Torres Hernández.
After blocking Picacho Ajusco Avenue for more than an hour, the dissatisfied students pointed out that the agreement that “we had was that today (Tuesday) a written response would be given to our statement, and a dialogue would be established with the community in which the rector and the academic and administrative secretaries would participate, but that was not the case.”
They highlighted that although Torres Hernández came to office in December 2018 by direct appointment of the Ministry of Public Education, “he is never in the institution, which has suffered serious deterioration during his management of both its facilities, including the library and the Lauro Aguirre auditorium, as well as in the academic and administrative aspects.” Among the points that the students demand is the dismissal of the rector, “because she has never shown her face. We have sought dialogue on several occasions, and she prefers to flee rather than listen to what the student community proposes.”
They added that their central requests include attention to the campus infrastructure, with substantial improvements in its electrical and connectivity facilities, as well as adequate conditions to carry out their professional practices, security in its facilities and bathrooms with decent facilities.
The dissatisfied students indicated that by determination of the student assembly, the take of the facilities, which, they stated, will be protected.
