Cancer in the DR: notable growth in the prostate and breast, but slight improvement in uterine cancer

Cáncer en RD: crecimiento notable en próstata y mama, pero mejora leve en cáncer de útero

The general number of people with uterine, prostate and breast cancer in the Dominican Republic experienced an increase of 10.8%, going from 187,577 in January-September 2024 to 207,938 patients in the same period of 2025, which represents 20,361 new cases, according to data from the National Health Service (SNS).

The SNS digital statistics repository, which collects care in public hospital centers, details that the increase in this disease in the country was driven by the diagnoses detected in prostate cancer.

The number of this type increased from 29,022 in January-September 2024 to 46,074 in the same period of 2025, which indicates an absolute increase of 17,052 cases and a significant variation of more than 58%.

This growth places prostate cancer as the one with the highest relative incidence in the country, reflecting the need to strengthen prevention campaigns and early detection programs aimed at men, especially in individuals over 40 years of age.

Breast and uterine cancer

In contrast, uterine cancer showed a reduction in registrations, going from 91,425 cases in 2024 to 88,489 in 2025, which is equivalent to a decrease of 2,936 diagnoses, equivalent to -3.2%.

Although it continues to be one of the main causes of cancer care in women, this slight decrease could be associated with improvements in vaccination programs and timely detection.

For its part, breast cancer maintained an upward trend, with 73,375 cases in the first nine months of 2025 compared to 67,130 in the same period of the previous year.

The increase was 6,245 cases, for a variation of 9.3%, which shows that, despite advances in awareness, it continues to be one of the main threats to women’s health in the country.

Uterine cancer registers a slight decrease, but breast cancer continues to increase significantly

The total increase in oncological diagnoses shows that although there is progress in some types of cancer, others show a worrying rebound that could be related to factors such as population aging, lifestyle and lack of regular check-ups.

Taken together, the data for the January-September 2024/2025 period reaffirm the urgency of maintaining sustained cancer prevention, education and comprehensive care policies.

Although uterine cancer registries show a slight improvement, the rebound in prostate and breast cases poses a challenge for Dominican health authorities in the short, medium and long term.
