In the middle of the session that was taking place in the Chamber of Deputies to vote for the agreement with the IMF, a group of protesters, against the negotiation, attacked the Congress.
Citizens threw stones, rubble, garbage and paint bombs into the Parliamentwhile burning tires with the initials of the IMF outside the Congress.
Some trash cans were even burned and Molotov cocktails were thrown at the security agents who, at that time, were trying to protect the facilities of the Congress.
The event that ended in riots left 8 injured, the sidewalk near the site completely destroyed, as well as the office of Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.
In a video that was broadcast by the same militant through social networks, it is possible to see how the stones broke all the windows in her office, while she recounts what happened.
With deep indignation, The president stressed that “paradoxically” she had been the victim of the attacks, when she, like Néstor Kirchner, managed to get the IMF out of the country.
“Paradoxically, it was my office that was attacked, the one that confronted the vulture funds, the one that kept the IMF out, fulfilling the legacy of my colleague Néstor Kirchner,” he said.
And he added: “Today, as never before, I remembered Néstor’s words about the IMF when he said ‘it always acted as a producer and vehicle of policies that caused poverty and pain in the Argentine people.’ Once again, a great shame.”
The Security Minister said that the attack on Congress “will not go unpunished”
After the violent events, Security Minister Aníbal Fernández repudiated what happened and assured that they are working to identify the protesters who attacked the Parlament.
“We are working hard to identify those responsible. They will not go unpunished,” Fernandez said, who also regretted that a police officer ended up injured in the attacks.
“We avoided institutional violence by coordinating without harming innocents. They injured a CABA police officer with whom I sympathize. We must analyze with his superiors how the procedure was put together.”
